La Pavoni Expo 2015: a gold-trimmed lever espresso machine
La Pavoni unveiled three new models at the 2015 world exposition in Milan, and the Expo 2015 is the most ornate of them. A gilded eagle sits on the boiler cap, the straight lever and pressure gauge are gold plated, and the handles are turned from rosewood.
Lever brewing, the traditional way
There is no pump. You raise the lever to let boiler water into the group, then press down to push it through the coffee, so you decide how fast each shot flows. The Stradivari-style group and the violin-shaped base give it a profile that looks good from any side of the bench. The boiler and steam wand are nickel-plated brass.
Steam and safety
A 1.6-litre boiler holds enough water for about 16 espressos and around 15 minutes of steam, reaching temperature in roughly five minutes. A pressurestat keeps boiler pressure between 0.7 and 0.8 bar, and a safety valve and manually reset thermostat sit behind it. The steam pipe takes an interchangeable automatic cappuccino attachment, and a sight glass shows the water level.
