Convex base for a domed puck
A convex tamper has a base that curves slightly outward, pressing the centre of the coffee bed a little deeper than the edges. Some baristas prefer it because it can help water move more evenly near the basket wall.
Motta build
The black-stained wooden handle has a full round knob and slim waist, and screws into a stainless steel base engraved with the Motta name, ‘Made in Italy’ and ’58 mm’. It stands about 92 mm tall and weighs around 360 g. Because the base curves, the tamp is not perfectly flat; that is intentional. Keep pressure even and straight down so the dome sits centred in the basket.

Flat or convex?
If you are unsure, a flat tamper such as the Motta olive wood flat-base tamper is the safe default. Convex suits those who want to experiment with puck shape on 58 mm portafilters.
