Walnut gives this tamper its dark chocolate colour and swirling grain. Also, the handle is fairly straight-sided with a gently rounded top, a shape that suits a pinch-style grip as much as a palm press. Each handle is cut from a different piece of timber, so the grain pattern on yours will vary slightly from the photos. Wipe the timber dry after use and it will last for years.

Practical details

In addition, the flat 58 mm base is turned from stainless steel with a satin finish, and the handle screws onto a threaded stud, so the timber can come off before the base is washed. Also, it stands about 92 mm tall and weighs close to 395 g, a comfortable middle ground.
