A commercial superautomatic coffee machine needs a standard Australian power point, but it needs that outlet to be a sensible one. Panica Coffee installs and services commercial superautomatic coffee machines across Melbourne, so coffee machine power requirements come up at almost every site visit. The three things that matter are the machine’s own rating plate, whether the circuit is shared with other kitchen appliances, and whether the plug on the machine physically matches the socket on the wall. Most machines run from an ordinary 10 amp outlet. Some larger ones do not. Checking which before the machine is ordered is a five minute job, and leaving it until delivery day is how installations get postponed.
What Are the Coffee Machine Power Requirements in an Office?
In Australia the standard general power outlet is 230 volt single phase, rated at 10 amps. Most commercial superautomatic coffee machines in an office setting are designed to run from exactly that.
However, the honest answer is that it depends on the model. Every machine carries a rating plate, usually on the back or underneath, listing voltage, frequency and either the current draw in amps or the power in watts. That plate is the authority, not a general rule.
So the first step is simply to read it, or ask your supplier for the figure in writing before you commit.
Why Does the Circuit Matter More Than the Outlet?
Because a socket on the wall tells you nothing about what else is sharing the wiring behind it. A kitchen circuit often feeds the microwave, the toaster, the kettle, the dishwasher and the fridge.
A commercial coffee machine is not a kettle that boils once and stops. The boiler reheats repeatedly through the morning, so the machine draws current in bursts for as long as people keep ordering. In addition, the heaviest demand lands at exactly the time the microwave and the toaster are busiest.
Consequently the fault that shows up is not a machine fault at all. The circuit trips at nine in the morning, someone resets it, and it trips again the next day. Our guide to common commercial coffee machine faults lists a tripped circuit among the first things to check when a screen is blank.
Not sure what your kitchen circuit is already carrying? Panica Coffee checks the power point and the position as part of a site assessment before anything is delivered.
What If the Machine Needs a 15 Amp Outlet?
Some higher output machines are rated above 10 amps and are fitted with a 15 amp plug. This is worth knowing early, because a 15 amp plug has a larger earth pin and will not physically fit a standard 10 amp socket.
That is a deliberate safety feature rather than an inconvenience. It stops a high draw appliance being connected to wiring that was never rated for it.
If your machine needs a 15 amp outlet and the kitchen does not have one, a licensed electrician installs one. In Victoria that work must be done by a licensed electrician under Energy Safe Victoria requirements, and you should receive a certificate of electrical safety for it.
Can We Just Use an Extension Lead or a Double Adaptor?
No. A commercial coffee machine should be plugged directly into a dedicated wall outlet.
Extension leads, double adaptors and power boards are not suitable for a continuously heating appliance. They add resistance, they are rated for less than most people assume, and they are a common cause of overheating.
If the outlet is in the wrong place, the answer is to move the outlet rather than to extend the lead to the machine.
Coffee Machine Power Requirements: The Checklist
The table below covers what to confirm, and who confirms it.
| Check | Why it matters | Who confirms it |
|---|---|---|
| Rating plate figure | Decides whether a standard outlet is enough | Supplier or the machine itself |
| Plug type on the machine | A 15 amp plug will not fit a 10 amp socket | Supplier |
| Outlet within reach of the bench position | No extension leads | Site visit |
| What else is on that circuit | Shared kitchen circuits trip at peak | Licensed electrician |
| Access to the switchboard | Needed if a new circuit is required | Building manager |
| Certificate of electrical safety | Required for new electrical work in Victoria | Licensed electrician |
Does a Tank Fed Machine Change the Electrical Requirement?
No. A tank fed machine avoids the plumbing, not the power, so the coffee machine power requirements are unchanged.
This is a common misunderstanding, because a tank fed machine is often described as needing nothing but a power point. That is true about the water connection, and it says nothing about what that power point has to be rated for.
Our guide to office coffee machine plumbing explains when a water connection becomes worthwhile. The electrical question applies either way.
What About an Office Move or a New Fit Out?
Raise power at the drawing stage, because adding an outlet during a fit out is far simpler than retrofitting one into a finished kitchen.
Tell the designer the coffee machine power requirements: where it will sit, what it draws and whether it needs its own circuit. Then the outlet appears in the right place at the right rating, and nobody discovers the problem on delivery day.
If you are relocating an existing machine, our guide to moving an office coffee machine covers what the new site needs before it arrives.
Common Mistakes
Most of the problems we see fall into a short list. None of them are complicated, and all of them are cheaper to avoid than to fix.
- Assuming every machine runs on a standard outlet without checking the plate
- Choosing a bench position first and finding the outlet afterwards
- Running the machine from a power board because the outlet is two metres away
- Putting the machine on the same circuit as the microwave and the toaster
- Leaving the electrical question until the machine is on the delivery truck
When Should You Call an Electrician?
Call one whenever new wiring, a new outlet or a new circuit is involved, and whenever the existing circuit trips more than once.
A repeated trip is information rather than a nuisance. It usually means the circuit is carrying more than it comfortably can, and the fix is electrical rather than something to be solved by resetting the switch each morning.
Equally, stop using the machine and call someone if you notice a burning smell, scorching around the plug or an outlet that is warm to the touch.
Panica Coffee and Site Readiness
Panica Coffee has rented, sold and serviced commercial coffee equipment for Melbourne businesses since 2017. We confirm the coffee machine power requirements, the position and the water supply before installation, so the site is ready before anything is delivered rather than after.
If you are still choosing equipment, our guide to office coffee machine rental in Melbourne explains what a rental plan includes, and our setup and installation checklist covers the rest of the handover.
Ask Panica Coffee About Your Site
Tell us where the machine will sit, what is already in that kitchen and how many people are on site. We can tell you what the position needs before you order. Call 1300 529 505 or send the form below.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an office coffee machine need a dedicated circuit?
Not always, although it is the safest arrangement in a busy kitchen. A shared circuit often works at low volume and trips once the microwave and the toaster are used at the same time as the morning coffee rush.
What voltage do commercial coffee machines use in Australia?
Standard single phase supply here is 230 volts, and most office machines are built for it. Always confirm the figure on the machine’s rating plate, because that plate is specific to your model.
Why does our coffee machine keep tripping the power?
Usually because the circuit is carrying too much at once rather than because the machine is faulty. A licensed electrician can confirm what else is on that circuit, and Panica Coffee can check whether the machine itself is drawing more than it should.
Can a coffee machine run on a power board?
No. A continuously heating appliance should go straight into a wall outlet. Power boards, double adaptors and extension leads are a common cause of overheating and should not be used.
Who pays for a new power point in a leased office?
That depends on your lease and is worth checking with the building manager before work is booked. The electrical work itself must be done by a licensed electrician regardless of who pays for it.
Do coffee machine power requirements rise with machine size?
Generally yes, because more boiler capacity and more simultaneous drinks mean more draw. The only reliable figure is the one on the rating plate for the specific model you are considering.
Can Panica Coffee check our site before we order?
Yes. Panica Coffee checks the power point, the position and the water supply before installation across Melbourne, so the requirement is confirmed in advance.
Getting the Power Right Before Delivery Day
Tell Panica Coffee where the machine will go and what else shares that kitchen. We can confirm what the outlet needs to be, so the installation happens on the day it is booked.
