Rocket Espresso Machine Repairs
Hand-built in Italy, Rocket espresso machines such as the Appartamento, Giotto and R Cinquantotto reward their owners with years of use when they are serviced properly. Panica Coffee looks after Rockets across Melbourne: home models are dropped at our Caulfield South workshop, and commercial ones like the Boxer are fixed on site.
- How we handle your Rocket: prosumer models visit our workshop, while a Boxer in a café is repaired in place.
- Our promise on every job: agreed quote first, genuine Rocket parts, and a warranty on the repair.
- Reaching commercial sites: technician arrives in 4–24 hours within 30 km of Caulfield South, or 24–48 hours further.
Repair or buy new? Rockets are built from heavy stainless steel and copper, so a weak pump, a failed pressure stat, a cracked group gasket or a stiff steam valve is almost always worth repairing. Replacement starts to make sense if a heat-exchanger boiler has been damaged by long-term scale or you want features your model lacks; the Rocket Boxer 1 Group is among the new machines in our coffee machine shop.

The Rocket range on our bench
Most Rockets we see are home and prosumer machines: the compact Appartamento, the Giotto with its angled panels, and the R Cinquantotto with its dual-boiler and PID temperature control. On the commercial side, the Boxer 1 Group appears in small cafés and offices. All of them use a classic heated brew group and quality internals, which means faults are usually mechanical and repairable rather than terminal.
Problems Rocket owners bring in
A squeaking or stiff group lever
The lever cam on the group dries out and wears. Cleaning, lubricating with food-safe grease and replacing the gasket and screen gives it a smooth action again.
Pressure gauge reading too high or too low
On heat-exchanger models the pressure stat controls boiler temperature. A worn stat lets the boiler swing, and the shots follow. On the R Cinquantotto, a PID sensor or setting may be the cause instead.
Slow warm-up and lukewarm shots
Scale on the element or a failing element itself makes a Rocket take far longer to reach temperature. We descale where safe and test the element’s resistance.
Leaks under the cup tray
Vacuum breaker valves, boiler fittings and pump hoses can weep over time. Water left sitting inside the case damages wiring, so leaks are worth attending to early.
From booking to collection
For an Appartamento, Giotto or R Cinquantotto, call us, then bring the machine to Rear 1/331 North Road, Caulfield South; the entrance is via the laneway off Bambra Road. Please empty the tank and drip tray and bring the portafilters. A Rocket left with us is generally ready in 3 to 5 days. A Boxer in a café or workplace is repaired on site: we confirm your booking within one business day and reach you in 4–24 hours within 30 km, or 24–48 hours if you are further out. You approve a quote before anything is replaced, and parts we do not have on hand are ordered in.
Looking after a hand-built Italian machine
- Use filtered water in the reservoir; scale is the main enemy of copper boilers.
- Backflush with a blind basket and detergent on a regular schedule, then rinse well.
- Lift the lever fully off after each shot so the group can release pressure.
- Wipe the gasket area with a brush daily so coffee oils do not bake on.
Rocket repair questions
Do I need to bring the portafilters?
Yes. We test the machine with its own handles and baskets to confirm the group seals properly after repair.
Can a dual-boiler Rocket be descaled at home?
Running descaler through a dual-boiler machine can loosen scale into valves. We prefer to inspect it and descale under control in the workshop.
