About ECM and the E61 group
ECM machines are engineered in Germany for people who take espresso seriously at home or in a small business. Many use the E61 group, a heavy brass head with a lever that controls the brew, along with PID controllers that hold the boiler at a set temperature. These designs are reliable, but the moving parts in the group and the electronics behind the PID both need attention over time.
Problems we trace on ECM machines
A stiff or dripping E61 lever
Inside the E61 group are cams, a valve and small seals. When they wear or dry out, the lever becomes stiff or water drips from the group when the machine is idle. A group rebuild with new seals and food-safe lubricant brings back a smooth action.
PID showing the wrong temperature
A faulty probe, loose connection or failing controller can make the display disagree with the real boiler temperature. We test with an independent thermometer and replace the faulty part.
Hissing from the safety valve
If the boiler vents steam through the safety valve, pressure is running too high, often from a sticking pressure switch or scale. This needs fixing promptly, as the valve is a last line of protection and should not be venting in normal use.
Slow refills and pump trouble
Blocked lines or a worn pump stop the boiler refilling properly and can trigger error warnings or a shut-off. We clear the lines, check the water level probe and replace the pump if it no longer reaches pressure.

- Book: send the booking and our team confirms it inside one business day.
- Home machines: call ahead, then bring the ECM to Rear 1/331 North Road, Caulfield South, entering from the Bambra Road laneway; the doors are open 9 am to 4 pm on weekdays and 10 am to 1 pm on Saturdays. Turnaround is usually 3 to 5 days.
- Business machines: a technician attends within 4–24 hours within 30 km of Caulfield South, or 24–48 hours further away.
- Diagnosis and quote: we explain what we found and the cost, and wait for your go-ahead.
- Repair and testing: genuine parts are fitted, ordered in if needed, and the machine is checked with test shots and steaming.
Before you book
My ECM still works, but the lever feels heavy. Should I wait?
It is better not to. A heavy lever usually means the group seals are drying out, and servicing them early avoids leaks and wear on the cams.
